Excalibur - Sword of Promised Victory

Description

EDIT 3-19-13: Fixed the handle to make it look closer to the original. Barring copying the actual original fairy letters, this sword is pretty much done!

Inspiration: This: http:// 1.bp.blogspot. com/_BXQEtzdiB4M/TSfb5U0lrXI/AAAAAAAAACw/W8FSgKxITEo/s1600/attachmentsfate63excali.jpg
It's the in-game inventory image of Excalibur from the original Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel.

Adobe Illustrator CS4: The whole sword, minus the glowy effects.
Adobe Photoshop CS4: The Gradient background, the glowy effects, and the beveling of the blade.

My first attempt at doing a replica of Excalibur, the Sword of Promised Victory. You know... Saber's sword from Fate/Stay Night? I did this in maybe, uh... ten hours? I don't really time my work, so this is just a rough guestimate.

Why did I do it? Well, it all started when someone on a forum I frequent put up a request to draw a totalitarian flag with Arthurian themes, sword preferable. Obviously this is more than just a simple flag-worthy sword, since I decided to just go full throttle and do a replica. Another reason: the original will always be super awesome. But it's not a vector, and so will always be stuck to a resolution of 800x600. I want something that I can BLOW UP to as big as I want, hehe. That's why I tend to make flags and such and other things I do into vectors. But yeah.

Quoting the Type Moon Wiki description:

"The strongest and most majestic holy sword that symbolizes King Arthur. It is her greatest and most powerful Noble Phantasm, which is a divine construction, the pinnacle of holy swords, forged by the planet as the crystallization of the wishes of mankind stored and tempered within the planet. It is the crystallization of the prayer named "glory" and everything etched in the hearts of those who are scattered at the sword's radiance; the nostalgic, sorrowful, and exalted dream of those who were placed on the bloody hell called a battlefield, of all warriors past, present, and future fully exposed to the fear of death and despair, and whom still cling to a desire: "to be exalted."

It is one of the ultimate god-forged weapons, a Last Phantasm, which was guarded by extensions of the planet, Fairies, before briefly being passed on to Arturia by the Lady of the Lake and later returned to the lake before her death. It replaced the destroyed Caliburn, and its sheath, Avalon, provided partial immortality for its wielder.

Excalibur is a weapon of directive energy that converts the prana of the wielder into light, intensifying the kinetic energy by convergence and acceleration, allowing for the use of Divine Spirit level thaumaturgy. It is an "ultimate killing technique" that releases light holding energy equaling Arturia's total amount of prana from the tip of the blade once the sword is swung. While the result is what looks like a large band of light, only the tip of the attack, which is a wave of light that can mow through the surface of the Earth, is capable of doing damage, as the band of light is the result of the "dislocation" of everything the attack destroys in its path. Its speed and power are among the greatest compared to other Noble Phantasms, and only Ea matches it."

tl;dr version: It's a God-Tier WMD capable of firing a death ray of literal PURE GLORY that can obliterate a thousand troops.

What else is there to say about it? It's an AWESOME sword. The noticeable difference is of course, how it isn't as blindingly glowy as it should be. For the blood groove, I had to rewatch a couple scenes from Fate/Zero several times (since the game CG has it in ultra shiny mode and the groove can only be seen faintly). It also proved to be one of the more difficult aspects to do.

The two golden parts of the handle are also blatantly 2D, and shaped wrong (too lazy to fix now. Maybe in a later version). The hilt itself is also kind of cartoony. As you can tell, I was also too lazy to copy the runes (officially called " fairy letters") from the original. So I used a font for Tolkien's Quenya (aka "elf letters", hurr) instead. Yes, I'm really, really lazy.

But hopefully, as my graphicz skills improve, I can do this awesome sword some REAL justice.

So yeah. Please comment!
